Writing Practice

I know what you're all thinking; "Mark, you're so awesome that there's no way you would need to practice your writing. You're just that great at it."

Unfortunately that isn't the case. You're at your best as a writer when you really find your stride and your style. Not writing in a while can kind of make you forget that, and put you back a few steps. It really sucks when that happens. Especially when you want to take writing even more seriously and write more. Which is what I want to do. Another reason I've been reluctant to write in Immortal Space is that I'm not really sure how well I'd handle writing it. I feel so out of sync with my own writing ability.

To that end I decided that I should really practice my writing. I want to write some shorter stories and just write. I also want to read my own writing again but I'm apprehensive about that too. My writing is so great that I'm going to feel bad when I read it. I'll feel bad because I can't write like that anymore.

So this is where you guys come in. I don't know if anyone really remembers this but Immortal Space was written based on a suggestion left in a comment. I can find some writing prompts easily enough online. In the time it's taken to write this I could have found several prompts. But I'm interested in if you guys have any ideas, or things you'd like to see me try and write.

If I like it, and I think I can do it, then I'll definitely give it a shot and see what happens. I don't think I'll get another full fledged novel like Immortal Space, but it could be fun.

Basically I'm asking you guys to do my job for me.

  1. ;D
Here's some I thought up recently:
The laws of physics are actual written laws, and as such, can be (illegally) broken.
Something about obscure, minor superpowers. Like a bunch of mafia gangs with each gang having their own unique ability. When one gang murders someone, their blood doesn't spill all over the places, but the body stays nice and clean. Or some other gang, that cannot be caught on security cameras.
Or maybe people gain "parental superpowers" once they become parents. Being able to see from the back of your head, the ability to hear your child from 5km away, when the parent gets sick, the resistance to that illness also builds up in the child, etc.

    1. I'd love those parental superpowers!

  2. Have you ever tried to write based on pictures. I find them to be awesome writing prompts in some of the blogs I visit.

  3. Right off the bat, I thought of you and how hard you've been working on writing and working out. What if there was a way to combine the two? Or, your cat having another identity?

AJ's wHooligan in the A-Z Challenge

  4. everyone needs to practice no matter what they choose to do....its like exercise...or hitting a ball in baseball...take a week off and you get rusty....having a coach to point out your mistakes as well is very healthy...

  5. I don't have any ideas for novels. Just some advice. It will go easier if you don't put too much pressure on yourself, and try to make it as fun as possible. If you are not into "Immortal Space" right now, then work on something else. But by all means keep writing.

  6. Dude! You have to write whatever resonates with you. I'd say take two minutes and just write down every random word that comes to mind. When you're done, look at them and see if there's a correlation or theme, something your subconscious wants you to say. Another possibility is to write one word prompts related to childhood memories and find the emotion behind one of those that gets your mind working.

Don't forget to subscribe to comments so you know if I say something back. If you want that is.
