How Do You Do It?

As most of you know I'm very self conscious about my writing. I'm very self aware and judgemental. I'm also incredibly surprised when people ask me for writing advice. Imagine my surprise when someone not only asked me for writing advice, but made me sound like some kind of top tier author. That, ladies and gentelmen, is what the podcast today is about. In it I read out their initial cry for help and my initial response. There was more to this but we quickly delved into the person's personal problems.

Also, unfortunately, despite my amazing words of wisdom they were left crushed when a story they posted garnered almost no attention. I was able to get past that but they weren't, this time at least. For now though, enjoy me showing off my massive writing tool.

Spoiler alert; I'm much more badass in writing and if someone asked me something like this in person I'd probably hug them, cry, and than blather for half an hour.

  2. Haha. You ended with "Stay classy!"... which may or may not have been an inside joke especially for me. (Anyway... I stole that line from Ron Burgundy, so I can't be too proud of myself.) I thought you gave the aspiring writer some really great advice. I heard someone once say that "talent" was nothing more than a really strong desire to do something. The young writer certainly has that. I personally feel that most creativity springs simply from having an immense dissatisfaction with the status quo. That's why, when many artists become rich and successful, they are no longer producing top tier work. Their life is so easy, they really can't come up with new material. Most of my own creations are inspired by the frustration I feel with my own mediocrity. So perhaps the young writer could even write about how anguished he feels about being viewed as average. Other than that, I would give him the same advice as you. Just keep reading and writing, reading and writing...

  4. When people ask for my advice, I tell them, "Use verbs. Lots of verbs. Readers love that shit."

  5. You are doing quite well with the Fan Fiction site Mark and I could tell you were very touched by this guys request. I'm not surprised your writing there is good as, like you said, when you began doing it, you'd already gained confidence as a writer and even published.

My daughter reads a lot of Fan Fiction and hangs out on those sites. I don't know her username, but it would be serendipity if she knew you and your work.

  6. That's awesome that people are asking you for advice. You definitely have the skills and experience to dole out the wisdom.

And as you said in the podcast, as simple as it is, the number one rule really is just to write. We learn from experience, and no matter how many pieces of advice you give someone, it's just not going to mean anything until you put pen to paper (or, you know, type on your laptop) and actually work at it yourself.

  8. very cool on them asking you, the rule is to just write...it takes practice, it takes failing, like any sport or skill...you have to work it...stop working it and think you have arrived and you are already going backwards...

  9. Phhh. All these people who think the number one rule is just to write... That's very good advice, but how do you overcome the procrastination issue??

Oh yeah, you do that tomorrow.
