Don't React Like This

I'm going to get serious for a moment here. A few days ago there was a very, very sick and heinous, and downright brutal, attack here in England. A British soldier was attacked, killed, and possibly even beheaded by Islamic extremists not far outside a barracks. It took the police twenty minutes to get there, and it was already too late. The event was witnessed by a lot of people, and even some children in a nearby school. While they had all the attention the extremists took the chance to spread hatred and threats to us all, and that is the main thing I'm here to talk about.

America, you're kinda cool, but you take your "security" measures way too far. I am genuinely afraid we are about to take ours too far too. It's not how we do things. The way British people react to things like this is to just keep going. That's what we do. After the 7/7 bombings that took out over fifty people when several buses and tube trains (subways) were taken out by explosives, people were back on public transport the next day. They had jobs to go to and didn't give a damn.

We're cool like that. America...not so much. Now you have people in American airports groping kids in case they happen to be terrorists or have things on them that can be used to make a bomb. You have full body scanners operated by people who probably have a hand in their pants. I love you guys but you can NOT trade freedoms for security and "freedom". I've seen Americans decry it and protest it, so I know not all of you are like that. Good on you guys.

I do NOT want to see England turn into a surveillance state of fear. I don't want America to stay that way. If you have people in airports groping kids then I'm pretty sure the terrorists have won. Show no fear.

Also please, I beg of you, to not judge all Muslims based on the actions of a few extremists. There are is a racist group in England called the English Defence League, and they've been attacking Mosques and Muslims. It's generally accepted these people are racists and do not speak for all of England. Why do you not get that the same is true for ALL extremists? They don't speak for all of their minority. There are Christian extremists too.

Never let the vocal minority speak for the quiet, and quite normal, majority.

  1. Words aren't much use when it comes to things like this, are they?
But I like how you put it.

    Indeed.

  2. Yeah, that shit was pretty extreme, especially with the camera footage of that douche with the bloody hands.
But it's always like this. We always start taking measures after shit's already gone down. And even then, it doesn't really help. If you want to do something stupid, you will do something stupid. That's just how things work. Overreacting isn't going to change that.

  3. The best thing to do about terrorism is to ignore it. If the extremists weren't getting their message across on national news, they'd soon stop.

  5. I think the worst thing going on is apparently there have been drone strikes by the American government against American citizens. Which I can't comprehend how this could possibly be legal, and is completely contrary to our Bill of Rights. Though I might have my facts mixed up a bit because the news is so depressing, I have been avoiding it, to try to keep my spirits somewhat out of the crapper.

  6. As an American...I agree with you. We DO overreact over here sometimes and it always frustrated me when that happens.

  7. I'm contacting the CIA and reporting your treasonous behavior!

Nah, but I actually do agree with you. People are way too willing to swap freedom for false security in America. I work in Boston, and people are taking pride in the way they responded to post-Marathon Bombing. "Boston Storng" is what they called it, but what it really was was people cowering in fear of ONE man (child) while martial law forced people to remain indoors. It's frightening how quickly this measure was implemented. Tanks and blackhawks were sent into the small town of Watertown to capture ONE KID. I think it was more a message from our administration than an act of trying to capture a frightened child.

People give into this fear-mongering tactic way too easily. Sorry for my rant.

  8. I agree with so much about what you say Mark when it comes to how much people have been judging Muslims. I will go to the end of the earth and back to defend good Muslims because I have got to know so many of them and they are lovely, caring and fantastic people who wouldn't dream of hurting anybody, it's a shame that some idiots actions get judged as the desired actions of the entire world, it's just stupid. I don't know I mean I believe that the safety of the people is more important than some principle that people should be allowed to do whatever they want to even if it endangers people.

  9. It's true, America places way more attention than necessary on so-called security against terrorism and whatnot, while neglecting (what I consider) much more pressing matters, like healthcare and immigration reform. It's lame to have to view depressing news like these from time to time, but all we can do is sustain our own beliefs and behaviors and NOT allow the actions of a few extremists (from both ends of the spectrum) change our way of thinking and treating our fellow human beings.

  11. Such a terrible tragedy. The people who do these horrible things are crazies. The do not truly represent the majority of Muslims who believe in peace, not hate and war
