No Round Up, Instead, Have This

You might have noticed the fancy new banner in what I believe is the top right. As you may have guessed, if you cared to notice, there is some meaning behind it. See, after SOPA failed, after PIPA failed, and after ACTA failed, the MPAA and RIAA decided "Fuck it, we still have a lot of cash left, let's try this again", and now they're trying to do something that is very shitty indeed. As they always do. Their profits would probably go up if they stopped trying to buy laws.

Anyway what they have in their heads this time is to change the law regarded your ability to sell things on. That is, if you buy a CD or a game, or even CLOTHES then they want to make it a law that you can't then sell it on. You don't own what you own is the basic message that they're spreading here.

The way this works is that there is a law that allows people to sell things on after they've bought them. They want this law to be changed in such a way that it prohibits you from selling on something that was made, or contains parts made, in a foreign country. Seeing as how everything is made in China, and things that aren't directly made in China have parts that are probably made elsewhere, this includes virtually everything that you own. What's even worse is they have the support of Obama and they're taking this to the Supreme Court. If the idea of Romney in charge didn't scare the fuck out of me I'd tell you all to not vote for Obama over this and all the other shit he's done.

This really would mean that if you decided that you needed some money, so you wanted to sell some things, you couldn't. On a really sickening level it could even destroy charities because they sell things that people have donated. It essentially prohibits the selling of used goods. eBay is out the window.

You can click on the banner for more information, or just go to http://www.youvebeenowned.org/. Either way, I urge all American readers to sign that, and all non-American readers to let any American friends know that this stuff is happening, and dammit we won't take it lying down. On our comfy beds. Which we bought. With our own money. Meaning we own them. So we can sell them if we want.

Then again, if you want to sell your bed then I think you're falling on pretty desperate times and I feel bad for you :( Everyone needs a bed.

  1. Why would they even do tha- oh wait, people can sell digitally downloaded goods as well, and they want to stop that.
This is getting ridiculous. They're just pulling shitty laws out of their asses left and right. But Obama supports it? That's.. wow. What an ass.

  2. Man this is absolutely disgraceful and I guess I'm going to have to join up in the resistance. It's amazing the lows that these record companies stoop to but this a new low, to bring in a law that could heavily affect charities is not a good one to say the very least. I'm glad that it's so far a US only potential policy but it can't be allowed to be passed, I'd rather have Romney in charge is Obama is going to support such utter nonsense!

  3. Wow, this has just gotten fucking ridiculous. I can't sell anything I own? Give me a break. I can't believe that Obama supports this. Signed.

  4. And I'll go the opposite route of ABFTS and say, I'm not surprised Obama supports it.

  5. And I'll just go my usual route as opposed to Elsie and ABFTS and say that I don't trust any politicians! I'm not surprised that any of them support it!

    Now off to sign!

  6. What a filthy bunch of business this is! Now let's see? Shipping millions of American jobs overseas to China = completely legal. Buying something made in China and selling it on ebay = illegal. Makes sense to me! This could open up the Pandora's box to Crazyville.

  7. So once again we've got the US thinking that the laws in their country should be applied to all country's by behaving as if they own the entire internet. The only way to stop these feckers is to stop the US itself. As long as the rest of our countries tolerate their shite, this will continue. They need to be stopped.

  8. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, Mark. I had no idea they were trying to eliminate used sales. Thrift stores are my haven, and they'd be darn near empty if it were passed. As for selling stuff, I've degraded in my ability to sell things. Just the other day I was rejected five times on a nice painting for super-cheap. So, I went home and just put on a different hat.

  9. lmfao wtf, so basically what they are saying is that they completely want to shut down business? buying and reselling is like what life is all about... murrica, get yo shit together.

  10. Ok, stopping pirating is one thing, I can understand that, but this is just full on stupid. I think it's an attempt to stop what has become a parallel economy in used goods: some video game publishing companies have already started to argue that the proliferation of places like gamestop have had a large negative impact on their sales, and rumors have already started that the new Xbox will not allow used games to be used on it. Of course, if this progresses, the impact can be fucking huge. Other companies in other industries with products that last for a good amount of time and are generally resold will ultimately want in on this too to raise their profits. Imagine what could happen if this hit higher priced items like appliances or, god forbid, cars? Maybe I'm subjecting the argument to a slippery-slope fallacy, but the possibility exists. Of course, there is also the potential environmental impact: imagine all that extra stuff getting thrown away because you can't resell or donate it to be resold...
