I Come Bearing...News

Well I do have good news, and a bit of not so good news. My experiment of last week was rather a success. 24k words and 8 stories later my collection of short stories is completed. It was actually finished on Thursday. On Friday Jessica came down, and I had a remotely productive weekend too. I did some cleaning, and replaced my new TV with a new TV that was exactly the same as the old new TV (confused yet?) but shittier. The sound was terrible, so I took it back, and then the new TV had exactly the same sound. So. Yay. I guess. It's supposed to be shit! Stay classy.

Okay so back to the book. The not so good news about it. It's not released yet. When it is, I'll be sure to let you know. For now, it's being edited by a good friend of mine who is a blogger and writer himself. Maybe me actually getting this done will even help get him to release his own book. I think he more than deserves to be published and he's got a literary degree (if I remember right) so he knows his stuff. If he says it's total shite though then I can be found curled up in a corner eating books. He knows I want the honest truth, so I can grow. So I guess if it is utter crap I want him to tell me that it is. As long as he also tells me why and how I can improve. That would be nice of him.

There's also been a change of cover too. After Fang saw the cover, he basically said "Not bad, but I could do better" and I think he did do a pretty good job, so he gets himself an actual credit at the start of the book. I'm not sure how much of this book is even mine any more. I didn't come up with all the ideas, I didn't design the cover, and I'm not doing the editing.

Then again, I suppose it wouldn't be fair if I was editing it.

An expected release is next week. I asked the editor to get it done as quickly as he could, and he said by the end of this week depending on how long it is. Sadly I can't really give him anything, or Fang anything, because I won't really be famous until my second book comes out.

Which will be in a few months probably.

  1. I read this on my phone earlier but couldn't comment, it's great to hear that your book plans are in motion and that you managed to get it written up so quickly. One thing to remember Mark is that the best books are written with a lot of time and a lot of thought but if you can write a quality book in a short space of time then I can't argue, that's more talent than anything.

It's great of Fang and the other blogger to help you out so much, free of charge as well. I didn't hate the first book cover at all but it'll be great to see what Fang has planned for it!

  2. I am proud of you, Mark. You set a goal and you met it. That book is 100% yours, you wrote the entire thing even if you had help with some of the ideas. It doesn't matter who edited it. I am still finding typos in my blog post and I've read it a dozen times. I expect to see certain words there so that's what I see when I read it. And, I can't draw worth a damn, there's no way i could come up with a cover for my book. It may just be my name (fake) and the title. LOL

And, I am totally confused about the TV....

  3. Good for you Mark! Elsie is right, the book is your creation. All authors have editors and illustrators. They bounce ideas off of friends and family as they write. Really looking forward to seeing it released.

  5. Sounds like everything is coming along masterfully! And yes, like Elsie said, we all need a little help, but the main thing is that YOU wrote it, and that's all that matters. Remember, even people like Stephen King and J.K. Rowling have editors that scour their books for mistakes/inconsistencies/clunky sentences. It's all in the interest of quality.

    DUDE WHAT
    DRUM ROLLS GET IN HERE

Also yeah I was supposed to see if I had another font up my sleeve for ya. Let me fix that real quick.
You're just crowdsourcing your book, which is perfectly legit. A lot of big companies crowdsource their stuff, so hey! Still, actually writing that stuff and turning our possibly shitty ideas into glorious productions of written greatness is the largest part of the book, so I wouldn't worry.
(Gee becoming a cover artist is surprisingly easy. :D)

  7. Hey that's awesome news! You're doing a lot more writing than I am! I'm very excited for you, this editor sounds like he knows what he's doing. It's always good to have someone honest *and* experienced in your corner. Your stories will benefit greatly, as long as you don't get too discouraged by any constructive criticism. There will always be ways to improve, but that doesn't mean you have to toss all your ideas in the garbage. We're always our worst critics.

Even though you got some help with the cover and editing, the story is still yours. The words are yours, and the idea wouldn't have existed without you. Sure, Fang and your editor friend deserve credit but that's what the acknowledgements page is for. You can still slap your name on the cover and claim ownership.

Congrats on completing your short story series, and good luck with the next step! :)

  8. Hot dog! That's a lot of writing in one week! I sure as hell could not do that. I get distracted way to easily. Anyway, great freakin' job, Mark! I'm glad you managed to make your mark. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on these stories. And like the past 30 commenters have already stated, all inspiration comes from some place, that doesn't mean that the stories are any less yours. Congrats!

  9. That's really awesome, Mark!

I'm glad that you were able to get all that done! Man, I know I couldn't.

  10. Congratulations! I can understand about the book. I actually prefer writing shorter stuff (which is why I like Blogger, I guess). A book is ultimately satisfying, I suppose, but it is a tough slog. Still...great job with the short stories.

  11. That is great news, Mark! I am so pleased that you did it and that it is totally yours.
Now I'm going to have to put it on my Christmas list!

  13. Grammar editing is done, going to give a re-read and compile some comments and notes for you to look at. My weekend's looking to be pretty busy suddenly, so I'll say Monday, Tuesday at the latest I'll have it back to you. Hope I can get it back to you sooner.
