A Is For Activism

As I've mentioned before today, this May 1st (though not the actual Mayday, as that is the first Monday of May I do believe, which is next Monday, at least here in Britland I should say) is a worldwide general strike. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, even you reading, should be taking the day off from work. If you're unionized, then actually strike, if not, then call in sick. Everyone of all ages is encouraged to do this, even if you're in school. If you just want a day off then do it, and pretend to be an activist. Anyway, if you're reading this now, then chances are you're either striking or it's too late, so I can stop with that now. Talk about other stuff instead.

I know I used to have a fair few activism posts on here before, and they kind of just stopped. If you follow me on Twitter you can subscribe to my Anonymous list to keep up, though of course I retweet a lot of stuff of their's anyway.

Now, more than ever, activism is really taking off in a huge way. The advent of social media has helped make things like the Occupy movement possible, and able to hit the heights they have. Don't let the lack of media attention fool you, the Occupy movements are still going, and going strong.

Long before Occupy though there were other movements. Movements such as Project Chanology. Anyone remember that? It was the internet vs Scientology. Anyone remember that too actually? I think those protests may still be going on, but I will be pleasantly surprised if they are.

Yes social media can be used for good, and yes activism can be too. You can fight for the wrong cause. But no matter what you believe in, or what you fight for, make sure you FIGHT FOR IT.

Some of you guys really make me proud. We stood together against SOPA, we stood together against PIPA, we stood together against ACTA, and we continue to stand up to anything they throw at us. There is more than these few things, there is CPIP, and the worst of them all, CISPA. Here's hoping Obama delivers on his threat to veto it. He will do if he plans to be re-elected. There are all kinds of SOPA's and PIPA's going on in the world. Keep fighting for them, and never give up.

Anonymous put it best when they said, "We will never forgive, we will never forget, expect us."

Make sure the people you fight regret not expecting you. Make sure you never forgive, and never forget.

  1. It's great to read your opinions on things like this Mark. Activism is extremely important too although honestly I think we should pick and choose our battles as activists. Some causes are wrong, in my opinion of course but still wrong although that's maybe unavoidable.

    1. Well it is true that we need to pick our battles. For the most part I think everything I've gotten involved in has been a good cause, and that can be said of Anonymous as well. Some people are going to see some causes as unjust, or wrong, but that is an inevitability.

  2. Standing up for what we believe in and not letting anyone else tell us what to do (especially if their interests are indirectly served) is something every single human being should do. The ones who do now are few and far between.

  3. May Day is next Monday on the 7th. Workers are getting the shaft from employers all over the globe right now. I hope a difference can be made and with no violence.

    1. Yes May Day for us is the first Monday of May. For some people though it is just the first of May. Some also don't have May Day :) It seems today that for once employers really got the shaft by their workers. I've also heard no reports of violence.

  4. Mayday was today in these parts. Minimum wages was also announced today as a gift to the workers after so many years.

    1. Wow, I actually kind of can't believe you're only just getting minimum wage. I'd like to say "at least you have it now" but really, that took way too long.

    1. Well I update every day so just load up once a day :P Anyone can be an activist. It's a lot easier these days thanks to the internet. Most of all though, you just have to believe in your cause.

  7. Project Chanology? Nope. Wow, I'll have to look that up. Totally agree about fighting the fight and always remembering.

    1. Always remember. Project Chanology was the fight between one of the first forms of Anonymous, way back when, against The Church of Scientology. It started out as an online thing but people eventually took to the streets staging a protest once a month outside a Scino centre.

  8. The internet is important to the generation who grew up with it and I'll help do whatever I can to keep it like it is and stop acts like SOPA.

    1. I didn't grow up with it, but it's still very important to me, and I won't let those fuckers ruin it.

  9. I don't know if the strike is going to be very successful in the United States, but that is not going to discourage me, or dampen my spirits about the movement. I recognize this is the beginning of a long struggle. If you could, follow up, and let us know how effective it was.

    1. Well from the sounds of it it went quite well in the states, and in other places too. Just remember to look for information yourself, rather than just taking what they give you, and you'll see it's a lot bigger than you thought sometimes.

  10. Didn't plan on working today anyway. Also my sister got today off, does that count?
Also hnggg I feel like doing another month of A to Z.

    1. That kind of counts. If you want to do another month of A-Z then go for it.

  11. Wow. I didn't know about the May Day.. I was totally out of the loop. Hm, I'm a bum anyway. It'll make no difference. XD

  13. Activism is Awesome! F*ck authority!! Its sad to think how good things were for workers back in the 50's and 60's and how bad they are now! People use to be able to work a good job buy a house go on nice trips and now people in the same jobs struggle to pay rent and give up there vacations to make more money to just get by!! I wish more people realized how much the working class has lost since the 70's!

    1. If wages had continued to change with the economy then chances are that things like this might not have happened. At the very least the minimum wage could be changed. Then again if you force people to pay more they'll fire people to cover the costs. There are some people who have it really bad, and desperately need help.

  14. Forgiving can be great, but only if they've bowed to your will first 8D

Also everybody here gets May 1st off, it's a holiday. So no worries there.

    1. Well I do believe in "Forgive your enemies. Nothing pisses them off more" as well though. We get the actual May Day itself off as a bank holiday Monday here. Which is why it's actually the first Monday of May.

  15. May Day is not acknowledged here in the US because the country is populated by lazy idiots. that is all.

    ReplyDelete

    1. The May Day strike has been acknowledged at least. That is all that's really needed. I would imagine laziness breeds May Day as an excuse to give everyone a day off.

  17. This passed me by this year...seems there hasn't been as many protests, which surprises me given the condem's handling of the economy...

  18. I am all about forgiving and forgetting. Maybe that's why I went to work today. :)

  19. I did go to school. I like school.

On a somber note, I do not like to be at the front lines with activism. It just isn't me.

    1. You don't have to be at the front lines, you can support from the back. There are many ways to be involved these days.

  20. the occupy movement kinda makes fighting against Scientology look like a joke imo

    1. The protests do. Chanology only hit the streets once a month, but Occupy is well, an occupation.

    1. That already happens. They don't have a dedicated Twitter but there are several accounts under the name. They're mostly there to help spread awareness and information, not start things.
