Guest Post: Terra Shield (A Spot of Guest Blogging)

Another guest post for you guys, this time from Terra Shield. It's a guest post about, well, guest posting. Thank you to Terra and everyone else who has contributed to me in my time of need. I love you guys.

-----------

Note: I wrote this post way back in 2008, when I was invited as a co-author of a blog which had bloggers from  3 different continents (Asia, Europe and South Africa) It was meant as an explanation for my quietness on that blog. The other day Mark said he was opening up space for guest blog posts, and I remembered this post, and figured that I'd volunteer it as a guest post. Ahem.

Are ideas that scarce? I find myself asking myself each time I pause to post something here and then give up, because I find it an extremely daunting task. I said I’d give it a shot, so here I am. Once again I find myself without a proper idea, so I thought I’d give my two cents on guest blogging.

After thinking (I should officially list it as my hobby, as I seem to spend countless hours thinking), I think I managed to put my finger on it. Actually, my finger merely brushed it before it disappeared into oblivion, but I think I got it this time. At least some of it…

Now blogging in a cool community like this one is as cool as it gets. It’s like you belong somewhere (if you find the sense of belonging somewhere to be important), and it is fun to watch the blog grow with all the different ideas and writing styles. And if your hobby includes reading blogs, then all the better as you have more stuff to read as there are more contributors!

I noticed I’ve been rather quiet on this blog and also on another blog AHD and I share. It’s pretty difficult to sit down and pinpoint the exact reason for this quietness. It might be the lack of something profound to say – I’m slightly prone to silliness and turn almost everything into some sort of joke. And with all the problems that are happening in the world how do you post something silly?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That was way back in 2008, when I felt rather insecure about the way I blogged. Although I have toned down on the silliness (unintentionally, of course as I suddenly seem to not have much time to dedicate to blogging these days, and there have been occassions whenthe silliness has been given a 'draft' status, never to see the light. Ever) I somehow do feel a bit more conscious about the content I post if it was going to be posted somewhere else with a different readership.

This being a guest post and all, I was wondering what are your thoughts on guest blogging?

  1. I find guest blogging to be a great concept Terra as it allows people such as myself to get a chance to read your writings which we may not stumble upon without the guest post. I wouldn't worry about re-hashing posting ideas others use anyway, especially when it's unintentional.

  3. From the sound of it, your situation was more of a group blog than you doing guest post for someone else's blog. Cool!

Guest posts are great (if the guest isn't a sloppy writer or downright idiot), and can really spice up a blog with, like you said, different writing style or ideas. Opinions, too.
MARK'S BLOG IS BEING SO VERSATILE LATELY

    1. It was a group blog, yeah - but I felt like an awkward guest there, hence the post.

  5. Well... I don't know...guest blogging, it's sort of like when George Harrison wrote "It Don't Come Easy" and gave it to Ringo Starr so he would have a hit...or when Lady Gaga writes a song and gives it to Adam Lambert. I mean it just shows how much ya all love Mark, as much as George loved Ringo, and that's a whole lot.

  6. I have never guest blogged; however I do recognize the silence for lack of profundity.

  7. I like guests posts. It gives a reader a chance to read someone they don't (if they obviously don't follow the guest already) and it can lead you to more blogs to read. On the other hand it gives the host a chance to gain readers from the guest. In short, I'm all for it.

As far as the ideas, sometiems it is hard to come up with something new and fresh all the time. You'd think it wouldn't be but no one wants to be the "Dear Diary" blog. You blog because you have something to say. And in turn you gain readers and they're comments. When I write I want people to respond in some way.

  8. You know it's kind of fun to rummage around in your friends earliest posts and see them when they were uncertain about which direction to take their blogs in. I know mine are horrible, please don't look!!

  10. Guest blogging is a great way to grow your blog. I've done a few but I find it hard when the blog owner doesn't tell you what they would like to see from you. I write from the hip, never plan and without some direction, it is difficult if you don't know their audience well. Still, it is a great way to meet new bloggers and people!

  13. As a reader, I enjoy guest blog posts as a way to connect with other active bloggers. I look at it as being similar to artists collaborating on a song. When the two content producers are similar in their creative output, collaboration is a good way to support each other and widen the audience exposure of both.

  14. Not exactly a fan of guest blogging. I like to have control over my things, and I like how my posts to be in a certain manner.
