Where's The Spam?

This is sort of an odd thing to post about, or even wonder about, but I do wonder where the spam is. On a few blogs I've noticed people complaining about their level of spam. Including but not limited to adverts for sex toys. But I never get any. Spam or sex toys. No I'm not wanting spam so I know where to buy my sex toys. Though I'm willing to concede it looks like that.

I also barely ever get spam off the blog, though I put that down to google mail's spam filter, or I just haven't been opening myself up to spam. On my hotmail account I get so much spam. It's pretty unreal really. On gmail I'm lucky if I get a spam email a month.

I'm also yet to have people try to scam me. I'm yet to win the Spanish lottery I never entered, or find myself the sole heir of a Nigerian princes bank account. Or help him donate his money to charity.

I'm not really saying I want this to happen, I'm just wondering why it happens to everyone else but me. Back when I was playing on WoW I didn't get much spam (though I got a spam filter, it alerted me when it had filtered spam, rarely happened) and my account was never hacked. Even though I didn't buy an authenticator and the people that did got hacked (I have to have a cruel chuckle at that).

Nothing fun ever happens to me. Though please, by God do not sign me up for any mailing lists or anything. I don't want the spam, and even if I did, I want it to happen naturally, don't force spam. Finally lols I set up the labels of this  post as "Spam, WoW", and all I could think of was Shamwow.

  1. No spam for me either. Well, unless you count the "Great post!" comments.

  2. @DWei I get a few of those but I'm talking about the weird ones like sex toys and just general selling shit.

  3. I get a lot but the yahoo folder collects it for deletion, I win a lot of lottery's though.

  4. I get a lot of "job" ones and of course I have won the Microsoft lottery. I have even had some interesting blog ones lately. I just delete and block

  5. I think it depends on what platform you use to blog. Some of software is better at detecting spam and keeping it from ever reaching you.

I use blogger and I only get about one spam comment a month or so.

  6. If you really want spam, you can find it in a grocery store. Spam in a can! I think they call it spam because it's supposed to be ham. Combine the words supposed and ham and you get spam!

Speaking of grocery stores, my latest post is store related!

  7. Hmmm... I get loads of spam comments...but the filter catches them and deletes them normally before I see them on my blog. I have my settings so I get e-mailed whenever I get a comment, and most of them are spam,...but they are usually deleted before I ever see them in my comments section. So, if you don't have your settings set that way, you may never be aware of the spam comments you may be getting. I dono. Also, I think you have to be blogging long enough for your blog to show up in search engines...because if the spammers don't know your blog is there, they can't spam you. At least that is a theory of mine. Also, depends on how you have your comment moderation set. If you set it for CAPTCHA, or set it to approve comments you will get a lot less spam. Those are some thoughts and theories I have on it... I am just speculating though....

  8. @The Angry Lurker I think that most email providers these days have pretty good spam filters, but my hotmail spam folder is always full of several hundred emails.

    @Mynx I've never won the lottery :(

@Kim I only really read blogger blogs :) It's good for spam detection, but occasionally it will block something that isn't actually spam. Very rarely happens though.

@Danjor21 I don't really like actual spam lol. I don't know why they call it spam but that's the best theory I've heard.

@Jimmy Fungus They are good theories, some are probably correct. I get an email whenever I get a comment, even a spam one. So if I get a comment by email that's not in my post, I just have to check the spam area.

  9. I get a fair few in my hotmail too, and a lot of phishing seems to happen with hotmail. My guess is that as gmail is owned by google it's also protected by their spam bots.

Any 'spam' comments I get on my blog are those 'great post follow me' ones, which are individuals posting, I just put them in the spam folder, you have to 'teach' it to recognise who is posting spam. Eventually the result of that can be that the posters accounts get deleted for spamming.
What I do see a fair bit of, and people questioning in the blogger help forums, is referrer spam. But googles spam bots are usually quick to pick up on that.

  10. My WoW account was hacked once, but it worked out because they gave me more gold than I had before I was hacked. I can start sending some of my spam your way if you want some haha.

  11. I never got that type of lottery winning, viagra etc spam on blogger and stuff.

I do get some on my mail though.

Hah, you just got another "nice post" spam.. oh the irony.

  12. I've only ever got a few spam comments on my blog but they were nothing major. When I had my personal email address listed on my blog I got a bunch of spam emails from African princes lol! And once, my old email address was hacked and people started receiving random emails from it telling them to buy viagra etc!

But apart from that, I get hardly anything.

  13. I think I got spam once, very unimpressive.

  14. @Dirtycowgirl I occasionally get it picking up something that isn't spam, but that's pretty rare. My guess is there are other people who may have reported them for spam, or some other parameters. If people have tried to phish me, I guess I just haven't fallen for it.

@Kathy S No thanks I don't really want any :) I've heard a lot of negative stories of WoW hacking, never really heard people say it ended for the better.

@Bob I get a lot of viagra in my email spambox, but not here. The only spam I get here is the occasional "Nice post!" like you pointed out. I should take a look at my hotmail actually. It's been a while, all my memory is probably taken up with spam by now lol.

@Hazel I occasionally get an email from someone I know who's hacked to buy drugs, but I don't think it's been viagra specifically. The email I have up here is one I made for the blog, and even though all the messages sent to it hit my gmail inbox, I'm yet to get much from it. No spam at least.

@Shaw Maybe people who send spam are compensating for other unimpressive things.

  15. Yeah I've never gotten any weird spam either. I used to get one guy who used a bot every once in a while, but he stopped.

  16. @My 2 Pesos You lucky person you lol.

@Kid Shuffle I think everyone had that guy. He's either stopped, or finally been banned.

  17. Acutally, i have problems regarding spam. But it's under control.

  18. @Interwebs Fails lol well hopefully it won't happen too much more.

    @level85nerd I'm glad it's under control.

  19. They only email spam I really get is about increasing my penis size (from non-existent I guess...)

I'd rather get cool spam like winning the lottery or getting an inheritance.

  20. @Heaven I now wonder what would happen if a woman tried those things O_O

  21. "I'm not wanting spam so I know where to buy my sex toys"

    Oh don't worry.

I'm sure you already know where to get your own sex toys. (O_<)

  22. Hahahahaha! xD The spam isn't the great, really. You're lucky you don't have it. LOL.

  23. I got lots of spam in my inbox. Some are offering products like penis enlargement pills.

  24. I always get spam mails.. they said, I won a lot of money in an online lottery... worth 1M USD.. yeep..

How I wish those were legit. :P

  25. @Henry That was pretty implied wasn't it?...I don't buy sex toys but there are several places they can be bought if I found myself desperate for some (see never).

@Jodie-Ann Yeah but I'm an attention seeker, it's like the spam people don't want me :(

@Marco Walter I mostly get spam for psychics and insurance, oddly enough I rarely get penis enlargement ones.

@Leah lol that wouldn't be so bad now.

  26. Ehehe some of the spam i get just plain amuses me! O_O it's mostly from chinses business men telling about large amounts of money that has been left in my name weeeee! i am, by internet spam standards, rich! O_o there's an article i read a few weeks back about an america journalist replying to spam. It's quite funny! I'll try and track it down for you if you'd like O_O xx

  27. I get lots of complains in facebook feeds and it's annoying. and also, the horoscope thing in my mails. gosh! I hate it. but I don't know how to stop them :(

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Woodlouse Awwww well at least you know how I feel lol.

@Tilly I've read some people replying to spam here and there but I'm yet to try and scam the scammers and spam the spammers myself lol. If I had a million dollars for every time I won the internet lottery I'd be pretty poor because I haven't won it once :(

@Mai Yang The mails or the site they came from should tell you how to stop them. Or at least, they really should.
