Spreading The Word

Well now that I've hit nearly 100 posts, I'm thinking maybe it's time I try to spread the word more. I mean, it seems like I might actually be pretty committed to this stuff lol. But the thing is, I'm not very good at the whole spreading the word thing, which is mostly why I ask other people to do it, but no, I won't be doing that today (though please feel free to do so if you wish >_>). Instead I'll be talking about the various ways other people spread the word, and why I don't do them. Or do I suppose, maybe we'll hit one that I do.

A common way people spread the word is to go on sites like omegle, and simply spam their link. I won't really allow myself to do that lol. I mean, I only go on Omegle to mess with people anyway, but really, why would I give them an outlet to mess with me? It's called being on the internet. I'll annoy you from in front of a monitor, but please, I don't want to mess with you if I'm giving you an outlet to get at me back lol.

Another way is if you are a member of a good online community, such as a forum. I'm a member of two forums, but they have very few members, so even though I posted my link on there, it's getting none-to-little traffic. Plus I'm not very active there myself which means people probably wouldn't listen to me too much anyway lol. Which is the problem on another part of that. Some would join forums just to spread their link, but I don't think people are likely to be nice with it, or even follow it, unless I was already an established member.

There is also of course genuine advertising, but I have three problems with this 1) I don't know how to do it, I know some places let you buy advertising space, but not all of them do. 2) I have no idea what to make the advert. If you have a webcomic, you can draw your own advert, or just use a comic AS an advert. Typically if you have a blog, I would assume you aim your advert to a particular group, IE "Gaming news brought to you by I<3GAMES. All day, every day". But I have no centric group to focus on. I don't really focus on one thing myself. 3)I'm poor so should probably avoid this anyway. Although Google DID send me free advertising money, but that still gives the problem of just what to make the advert. It works by your site coming up in searches on terms, but I don't know just what terms I should use. I don't want to use too many and see my money disappear without reappearing through the magic of advertising.

Next up is social media. Such as Facebook, or Twitter, or Reddit, or whatever. I have very few Facebook friends, and even fewer actual people on there who read what I post. I sometimes put my posts up on there, but no one really comes from there. So I kinda stopped. I viewed it as a wasted effort. I also don't have a Twitter account, and I seem unlikely to get one anytime soon. I'm on Reddit but now they won't let me submit links anymore, plus the people there don't seem to like me much anyway lol. I'm on SU, but that's just random traffic, if people come from there they typically hit stumble straight away again. If SU sent you here, I hereby challenge you to leave a comment, do it anonymously if you want, but prove that you read this. If you can read this challenge then yes, you probably did read this post. And if you can read this sentence it means you crashed into me. Well done.

I have a Youtube account, and I have toyed with the idea of doing a vlog every so often, as well as a blog post, and I would get some traffic from that I guess. But like I said, it's something I'm toying with, and yet to put into action. I don't even know if I'm ever going to put it into action.

So yes, I've talked about some ways to spread the word of me and my work, but I also went into why I won't use them, or why they are ineffective. Here's the ultimate point of this post. Any suggestions? Any suggestions on just what terms to use for my advert are massively appreciated.

  2. Spreading the word usually doesn't work very well for blogs. Either people are interested, or they are not.
Websites that offer services like games, calculators, etc, get attention more quickly. Especially when they integrated Twitter and Facebook sharing.

Getting great amounts of traffic to your blog takes some time and quite a few very good posts, but you'll get there eventually. ;D

  3. Ever tried doing guest posts on other peoples blog? Or striking a deal with another blog, basically, they put a link for your blog on their site and you put a link for their site on yours.

  4. you have a lot of things in mind indeed! haha!

I don't know, fb do sometimes work for me, but only if my friends find it interesting to read. I mean, my friends are not much into reading but often times I kinda influenced them to read my blog especially if I made it sound sooooo cooooool and interesting. Also, they would read it if it has something to do with them or at school and stuff.

    Yeah, why not try Vlog?

But anyway, I'm not much concerned with advertisements though since I'm not earning with my blog :)
I have ads but it was actually my friend's idea to give it a try since my account was been disabled by google. great! hahaha!

but if you want, I can help you out. I can post your write up in my wall. you knows, you'll get lucky and someone will read your post and then get addicted by it. ^_^

  5. @Fanglol thanks for the vote of confidence :) That is a major downside to blogs but I'm sure I can get there eventually :)

  6. *who knows..(let me correct that)

  7. @Inverse I haven't. I've seen other people do it, but wasn't sure I had enough of a reputation myself to do it. The same goes with links, I probably don't get many different visitors than they do.

I'm pretty pessimistic lol. Thanks for the advice though, I think I'll get round to trying it some time.

  8. @Mai Yang I have one person who will come here from FB :P It's not all about the ads, it's not all about making money, I'm here to entertain, and occasionally, make people think :) That would be very helpful if you're willing to do it ^^

  9. One advice: Don't do vlogs man, 99% of vlogs is just people making idiots out of themselves in front of the entire world.

  10. There are hundreds of thousands of blogs out there. You have to make your blog as unique as possible.

  11. I'm sure there are many resources on the net as to what are the best terms to put in an advert

  12. write your blog address down on 100 black index cards.
everywhere you go, stick one in a random place such as a book in a library, or in a stranger's backpack when they're not looking.

  13. Yeah, I have similar problems with these methods also.
I'm not on any forum, or social site, so those are not an option for me.

Sticking the blog aderss on random places might work. Or you can do it with those mosaic scannable thingies, which I'm not sure what they're called right now.

  14. Sir, you just gave me an idea. ;D

  15. @My 2 Pesos Well that was one of the things I was aiming to do with this :)

  16. Trying to get your blog out there? You can do what I do and you even have more time than me.

I just go to my followers, and go to the blogs of those who comment on said blogs, rinse and repeat.

    Surprisingly effective.

  17. God... I'm not even close to a hundred posts.

  18. The trick with reddit is getting the right sub-forums, like with specific categories. There are a lot of dicks on there who just downvote for no particular reason though.

  19. @Michael Westside Do a post a day and you'll soon get there, no matter how soul crushing it is -_-

But nah I've loved pretty much every minute of it really.

  20. @cheshire Well I'm not too familiar with all the finer sub-reddits, and anyway, I can't seem to submit anything anymore, no one else seems to be, so for now I'm off Reddit lol. I can't be arsed to make another account. But I'll probably try it eventually.

  21. Try doing some following/views trades. The people will probably check out your site every time you post so you can get some visitors that way.

  24. @Neon I expected someone to do that lol.

  25. @AnneThat is one of my many life goals. A good reason why I'd need several lifetimes to do them all.

  27. Came here from Bryan and Brandon's blog.
    Nice post ;)

You were asking "surely they read it? Right? Right?"
Trust me, I do read :)

Haven't really got any good suggestions for you though. Other than probably including FB social plugins (the like button and a comments tab) every post. If even one of your friends likes the post, you'll be expanding the link's reach. Hasn't really worked for me yet.

  28. @Kirklops Heh thanks. The one friend who does read it states clearly that I'm the only one who visits her page lol, so even if she did like it for me, it wouldn't be vastly increasing its power :P My blog seems to go through periods of not growing much, then bam, I get a few more readers. Eventually I'll have a lot, I just have to stick with it in the slow times.
